Went to West Virginia to help locals
40.0 hrs Service Hours

My experience was truly captivating as soon as I left I felt deep dread not wanting to go to the Wild West of the Appalachian mountains afraid of not having a phone and contact with close friends and family, however. As soon as we arrived I felt a deep connection with the area as it was both beautiful and dangerous at the same time. Through the course of my stay I would learn more and more about the area and the people in it. Although the service was boring and stressful at times it would lead to a great satisfaction that I helped somebody today. In the end I really did love this trip and look forward to the many adventures I may partake in my senior year.

Are the service hours you completed COMPETENCE HOURS (learning about social justice issues) or COURAGE HOURS (direct or indirect service to others)?

COURAGE

Which Gilmour charism (Divine Providence, Forgiveness, Hope, Hospitality, Inclusiveness, Option for the Poor, The Cross, Zeal) did you best live out through your service experience? Please explain.

Option for the poor because almost all of the West Virginia alps are extremely impoverished because of the lack of proper education and job flow. We as a group went down to help the poor in many different situations such as fixing a summer camp or clearing trees from a elderly man’s yard.

Would you try this service experience again? Why or why not?

I would do it again because of the bonds I formed with people that I had never talked to before. This would include both students and teachers. Alison it was very fun getting to learn from the locals about the place we were visiting. I want to see the dog Merl too.

I learned about the underground railroad
8.0 hrs Service Hours

We went to learn about the underground railroad from a very talkative lady. Then we helped out at the food bank and that was a blast. Finally, we went to a very weird museum that I definitely will never be going back too.

Are the service hours you completed COMPETENCE HOURS (learning about social justice issues) or COURAGE HOURS (direct or indirect service to others)?

COMPETENCE

Which Gilmour charism (Divine Providence, Forgiveness, Hope, Hospitality, Inclusiveness, Option for the Poor, The Cross, Zeal) did you best live out through your service experience? Please explain.

Inclusiveness because I want to include the history of the Underground Railroad in my memory so that the hardships may never be forgotten.

Would you try this service experience again? Why or why not?

Sure but there must be no museum visits maybe a little more service.

REVISIONS REQUESTED

I need a different confirmation letter, this doesn't really achieve that.  Also, travel time doesn't count...

We had an early morning arrival at around 9, and we got right to bagging pears. We had a short break half way through and then we filled food bags for kids in need.

Hospitality because we are giving away food to those who are in need of it.

Would you try this service experience again? Why or why not?

Sure it was fun.

I was a freshman reatreat leader
12.0 hrs Service Hours

I was the station leader, and my station was skits as we encouraged the freshman to be brave and have good and meaningful skits. There were some ups and downs, but the best skit was when Elsa battled the lunch ladies. The lunch ladies won and Gilmour's food was restored.

COURAGE

Which Gilmour charism (Divine Providence, Forgiveness, Hope, Hospitality, Inclusiveness, Option for the Poor, The Cross, Zeal) did you best live out through your service experience? Please explain.

Hope because with the amount of energy and ambition in the freshman class I hope and have hope for their future at Gilmour.

Would you try this service experience again? Why or why not?

Yeah I would love to do it next year because I like to meet the freshman and learn about their story.

pass out snacks in a biking race
6.0 hrs Service Hours

We attended the challenge and were welcomed with a full spread of food including bagels and doughnuts. Soon after, we embarked on our team's journey as we set up stations along the national park trail. These stations had snacks and drinks for the bikers. We sat there for probably about 4 hours and then returned to the original meetup spot. At this spot, we were each given ice cream and pizza—the end.

I belive I best live out hope because I see the positives in everything and can never become disparaged over a bad decision or news.

Would you try this service experience again? Why or why not?

Sure because it was great to see so many people rejoiced by our commitment to their service.

Martha Ligas approves Braeden Friesen's "Freshman Reflection". Now complete!
Freshman Reflection

I went to the food bank from 6 - 8 pm
Freshman Reflection

It was the first time I had been there and wondered what was inside the food bank. Well now, I know but we will get to that later first off the documentary was very interesting because it talked about how people have food but not really good healthy food. They may just be eating nonsense like frozen pizza. Obesity comes along with food problems I found that very intriguing. Now for the food bank we arrived there around 6:10 and started right away I boxed the cereal. We all added our food into boxes which were given away to families in need after that was done we cleaned up and went home. Some things I could have done better were maybe unboxing my food better I ripped up a few bags on accident. Something I did well was keeping up I always was there to put my food inside the box thanks to J.J unpacking stuff for me.
