I was a Freshman Retreat Leader
15.0 hrs Service Hours

I led the skit station at the freshman retreat with Braeden Friesen. We brought props, helped to engage the freshmen, and led them in insightful conversation. I also was a Eucharistic minister during the mass at the end of day 1.

Are the service hours you completed COMPETENCE HOURS (learning about social justice issues) or COURAGE HOURS (direct or indirect service to others)?

COURAGE

Which Gilmour charism (Divine Providence, Forgiveness, Hope, Hospitality, Inclusiveness, Option for the Poor, The Cross, Zeal) did you best live out through your service experience? Please explain.

I think I lived out forgiveness because I gave so many different examples of forgiveness and how to demonstrate forgiveness in a skit. I also lived out hospitality, as I hoped to make myself seem more open to the freshmen if they ever needed anything. I now talk to more of the freshmen and enjoy their perspectives.

Would you try this service experience again? Why or why not?

Yes, I would if I was back next year! I loved leading the skits because we hardly got the same idea in a skit twice. They were all creative and I personally really enjoyed the freshmen's perspectives.

I went to Honduras
40.0 hrs Service Hours

We woke up early in the morning of June 20th to get to the airport. We boarded our flight, the day flew by, and suddenly we were in Honduras. The very first day we were there we got accustomed to the area, took a tour, and met our translators, Luis and Marina. We went to sleep, and the next morning we woke up, had breakfast, met more important people (the construction crew and our security guards), and went to go meet the kindergarteners. The kids sang us songs in Spanish, and we sang back to them in English. We played with the kids for a while, and while they spoke rapid-fire Spanish and I spoke no Spanish, we still had a great time. Later we went and played soccer with the older kids, where we were destroyed multiple times. We didn't stand a chance. We went to bed that night tired and sweaty. The next day we started the wall, which we continued to work on every day. We played soccer more often, and got poured on (it's winter in Honduras, which means rainy season), and saw many many bugs. One of the low points of the trip, in my opinion, was seeing a scorpion on our bathroom floor. It was terrifying. Each morning, we would walk the little kids to school, and the pure joy on their faces when they saw us coming us unimaginable. I loved every minute of this trip, especially every minute I spent getting to know people I didn't know before.

Option for the poor was best lived out because of our service in an area that needed it so badly. The brick wall we built made the area more inviting and welcoming, as opposed to the chain link fence and barbed wire it used to be. Our group staying in Nuevo Paraiso also meant jobs for the cleaners, chefs, laundry ladies, security guards, etc., which helped all of them in their own lives as well.

Would you try this service experience again? Why or why not?

I would absolutely try this service again. I loved spending time with the kids and trying the new experience of building a wall. Seeing the Hondurans showed me the true value of a good work ethic, and I'm so glad I went. I hope God brings me back to Honduras again soon.

I helped at Gesu's Vacation Bible School
20.0 hrs Service Hours

For a week, I went to the Church of the Gesu at 8:30 to set up to work with kids aged around 7-9. We played outside and in the gym with them, led activities, and read and acted out bible stories. The kids learned valuable lessons and got to walk around the church. We helped manage kids and aid the leaders. There were also multiple kids with ADHD, or on the spectrum. It was our job to make sure all the kids were included and a part of all the activities.

Hospitality and Inclusiveness were acted out because our job was to include all the children and help make it a good learning environment for all the kids. Zeal was a major charism acted out because I did my best to make God "known and served" throughout my week with these kids.

Would you try this service experience again? Why or why not?

Yes, I love helping with kids, and I love specifically helping with Gesu kids because I see many of them at church or at the school when I volunteer there.

I was a Shaker Youth Hockey Coach
100.0 hrs Service Hours

I have coached this team for 2 years, and every year it's a learning experience. I love growing in my own knowledge of hockey while teaching them how to play as well. My favorite part of this season was probably when we went from being 4th seed at the end of the year going into playoffs, and beating the number 1 ranked team (who had only been beaten/tied against twice, and both times were our team). We went on to get 2nd place in the championship game, but I was so proud of them. The kids I coach are like my little siblings, and I've grown in friendships with them, their siblings, parents, etc. I truly appreciate every minute I spend with these kids and I'm looking forward to coaching again next season.

COURAGE

The cross, because although there were many moments of hardship, we grew and did our best to adapt. For example, our goalie got stuck at a panera for our tournament final game, and everyone worked together to pick him up, while our other goalie suited up.

Would you try this service experience again? Why or why not?

I can't wait to coach again next year. I love every moment I spend with the kids.

I am an altar server at Gesu Catholic School
154.0 hrs Service Hours

For many years, I have altar served at Gesu. Every Sunday since 6th grade, I have been an altar server with many other Gesu students and graduates. I have been especially helpful with younger kids who are just learning how to serve, as I train them and aid them with anything they need to do.

I believe I best lived out hospitality and zeal because through my actions I hope to make other people feel welcome in the Gesu community, as well as zeal because I do my best to serve God through the face of our church.

Would you try this service experience again? Why or why not?

I will continue to altar serve as often as possible, and whenever Gesu needs me.

I was a Shaker Youth Hockey Coach
90.0 hrs Service Hours

I was an assistant coach for the Squirt 2 team. I do not play hockey, but it was very fun coaching the kids and watching them improve. I used my lacrosse goalie experience to help the hockey goalies and I was an equipment manager, photographer, videographer, and babysitter for the team (especially on our overnight trip to Michigan). I kept everyone in check, was moral support, and helped explain the rules of the game during film sessions and on the bench. Overall, I was an important asset to the team and I would love to do it again next year.

COURAGE

Which Gilmour charism (Divine Providence, Forgiveness, Hope, Hospitality, Inclusiveness, Option for the Poor, The Cross, Zeal) did you best live out through your service experience? Please explain.

I feel I best lived out the charism of Option for the Poor. When you are part of a sport of any kind, there are going to be people better at it than others. During our season, we had kids playing up from multiple levels down. We helped these kids feel included and a part of the team, and in doing so helped make them better at hockey.

Would you try this service experience again? Why or why not?

I would. I did this last year as well and it has just been such a good experience. It's so much fun being a part of Shaker Hockey, especially because not growing up playing hockey and then going to a hockey school is interesting. I love helping out the kids and I love being their coach, although it is more of a long-term babysitting gig than really being a coach.

I was a Shaker Youth Hockey Coach
70.75 hrs Service Hours

In late 2020, I asked if I could help coach my brother's team with my dad. My dad said he would have to ask the head coach, Coach Berg, so I waited a full year. Last November, my dad finally asked Coach Berg and he said yes. I started going to practices and games with them, and I had a lot of fun. For one thing, I have never played hockey. It was fun to learn the sport and coach kids that were 7 years younger but 7 times better at it than I was. There were 2 main coaches and 3 student coaches to coach 10 kids. However, if there was a shortage of coaches on the other teams that practiced at the same time as us, I could help out on other teams. For example, when there was no coach for the Mite Blue team, I coached them solo for the entire practice.

My jobs consisted of keeping the kids in line (as some had anger management problems or weren't good with teams), warming up the goalie and sometimes the kids, opening the door during games, and shouting encouragement. I got to know all of the kids and it was so fun to coach them. Overall, I'm hoping to do it again next year, granted my dad can coach again.

I think that I best lived out Inclusiveness during this time, because no matter what their skill level was, or how well they played the last period, the kids all got to play as much as they wanted or as much as their behavior towards their teammates and opponents allowed. We did our best to make sure everyone played and everyone had equal opportunities for goals and playing time.

Would you try this service experience again? Why or why not?

I would love to do this again. This was so much fun and I loved working with the kids. As long as my dad can coach next year, I'm planning on going back.

Carol Nursery School Service Hours
59.5 hrs Service Hours

Every morning for three and a half weeks, I woke up around 7:30, ate, and biked to Carol Nursery School, where I went inside, got keys, and set up the activities for the day, including but not limited to the sprinkler, arts and crafts, sandbox toys, and a 'campsite'. Once the camp started, I was responsible for keeping the kids in line when we went places, keeping them content when we were playing, explaining art projects, doing demonstrations, and cleaning after we ate. There were two other girls volunteering with me, and my sister came for the last few days as I couldn't. I was in a class with 10 kids each week, some staying for all four weeks and others not. There was, however, another class that I didn't work with as closely but still worked with. I also labeled artwork with the kids' names and came up with ideas for the kids to do. Overall, I was an assistant teacher and helped the teacher in every way needed.

Which Gilmour charism (Divine Providence, Forgiveness, Hope, Hospitality, Inclusiveness, Option for the Poor, The Cross, Zeal) did you best live out through your service experience? Please explain.

I believe that I best lived out the charism of hospitality because at the camp, we tried our best to make everyone feel welcome and included in the activities that we were hosting. We did our best to make sure the kids were having fun the whole time they were there.

Would you try this service experience again? Why or why not?

Yes, I enjoyed doing this service. It was fun because I enjoy working with kids.

I worked at the food bank
Freshman Reflection

At 8:00, we left my house to drive to Gilmour on Saturday, November 6th. When we got to Gilmour, I boarded a bus and we drove to the GCFB. When we got there, we washed our hands and got assigned to a station. My station was loading cereal boxes into the Shelf Stable box. I had to put two boxes of cereal into each box. We worked on that for three hours with a 30 minute break. Overall, we filled 320 shelf stable boxes with 9,600 pounds of food. I went through two pallets of cereal. It was definitely a fun experience, and it means so much that I'm helping people through a hard time.
