Arizona Immersion Classes
10.0 hrs Service Hours

All participants involved in the Arizona Immersion experience over spring break were required to attend one-hour classes on Monday mornings before school. In these sessions, we learned about what the term "immersion" means and why we aren't necessarily going on just a service trip. The classes we had prior to the trip allowed us to meet the people we were going to be spending time with and also exposed us to what the area we were traveling to do would be like. The classes we had following the trip taught us what to do with the experiences we had gained from our travels and how we could continue to learn from them moving forward. During the last class, we were tasked with creating a presentation that highlighted one moment from the trip and creating a plan in which we could grow in solidarity from that encounter. Overall, I feel that without these classes, the meaning of this immersion trip would be much different for me.

COURAGE

Which Gilmour charism (Divine Providence, Forgiveness, Hope, Hospitality, Inclusiveness, Option for the Poor, The Cross, Zeal) did you best live out through your service experience? Please explain.

I believe I best lived out the charism of The Cross. Through our service experience, many of us viewed hardship and suffering along the way. However, we used what we had learned and saw as opportunities to grow as people moving forward through our final presentations.

Would you try this service experience again? Why or why not?

I would most definitely take these classes again if they were surrounding a different subject or area of focus.

Arizona Immersion Trip
40.0 hrs Service Hours

From March 12th to 18th 2023, I participated in the immersion trip to Goodyear, Arizona. This was a very special time for me because I got to meet new people from school and hopefully create meaningful relationships that will continue throughout the rest of my time at Gilmour. For most of the trip, we spent the mornings and afternoons with students at Saint John Vianney School in Goodyear. I spent most of my time with the preschoolers, where I really seemed to connect and have fun with them. The time we spent at Andre House and St. Mary's food bank was also very valuable and showed me that there is power in the small things that we can all do by ourselves. Lastly, I especially enjoyed the hikes we went on and the sites, mountains, and views we saw together, considering the fact that it's not something that you would always see in Ohio. While I miss the Arizona sun, I also miss the friends I made and the people I met along the way.

Option for the poor. While we were not always surrounded by poor populations, our time at the soup kitchen and food bank led us to care for some of the most impoverished people in the community. The time we spent at Andre House allowed me to meet some of these people and see what their lives are actually like. Most of them live in tents found on city streets and are usually neglected or forgotten about. I truly felt like what we did to help was actually making a difference - the people at Andre House certainly seemed to think so.

Would you try this service experience again? Why or why not?

Of course! I have always thought about coming back in a few years and seeing the same children I met at SJV. If I was asked to go, I would say yes in a heartbeat.

Working at Gilmour's Open House
2.0 hrs Service Hours

On October 30th, I gave one family and child a tour of Gilmour's campus as they begin their high school admissions process. We went to places like the Middle School, classroom building, and even the Tudor House. The tour concluded in the Athletic Center where there were drinks and food and where they could also speak with teachers and coaches based on their interests.

Inclusiveness: As a tour guide, I included my family in the Gilmour community as they learned about my personal high school experience. They became a part of the community as I welcomed them to our campus.

Would you try this service experience again? Why or why not?

Of course! It felt good to meet new people and show them something that I experience every day.

Volunteered at Gesu school's high school night
2.0 hrs Service Hours

I met with other Gilmour students to speak with students and families at Gesu's high school night on October 5th. We discussed why Gilmour would be a good fit for them and what they should consider when making their high school decision. It was definitely interesting to return back to my former grade school.

Hospitality: We created a comfortable environment for families who are working to make the best high school decision for their children. We want to stress that they are always welcome to the GA campus.

Would you try this service experience again? Why or why not?

Absolutely. I am naturally talented at public speaking and enjoy meeting new people.

Volunteered in Lower School Gardens
1.0 hrs Service Hours

Along with other freshmen, I walked down to the greenhouse gardens at the Lower School during Community Block and volunteered for one hour for a third week. During this time, I met Mrs. Sanders and helped to prepare the gardens for the fall season. We also helped to create compost to harvest new plants and vegetables and picked out new vegetables to set aside, adding to the collection we made in weeks one and two.

I think I was best living out the charism of hospitality during this time. I was serving Mrs. Sanders, who needed our help and working towards the greater good of the garden during my free time.

Would you try this service experience again? Why or why not?

Yes, I would definitely volunteer for this opportunity again. I saw it as rewarding and peaceful. This experience really showed me the true effort and responsibility that comes with maintaining a successful garden.

Peer Tutoring
5.0 hrs Service Hours

During the second semester, I met with two 8th-grade students for peer tutoring help in Spanish. As a Spanish 3 student, it was a great opportunity for me to work on my own Spanish skills as well as help younger middle school students with their skills. This was also a great way for me to prepare for my OPI which was at the end of the school year.

Hospitality. It was always my goal to make sure that the people I tutored felt welcomed and that they knew it would be ok to make mistakes.

Would you try this service experience again? Why or why not?

Yes! Although I will not be taking Spanish next year, I hope to work in tutoring in other subjects as well.
