I never knew how the food bank worked or how many people were in need so this opened my eyes to that reality. Stocking and organizing things there really made me feel good about helping others and the program. I learned a lot about the process and how it works there through his experience. At first I thought this would be one a time but I will definatly help out there more because of the impact the food bank has on others. It made me very grateful that My family provides so much for me because not everyone has that.

My service experience at Gilmour helped me develop a passion for compassion for the vulnerable through a variety of experiences. Volunteering for organizations that help those who are sick, struggle with a disease, or have health issues truly helped me with this. I learned so much about what these people face each day and how much our time and volunteering truly impact them. The organization “Capes For Kids” makes capes for the kids in the hospital battling illness. My friend and I helped with this and made a variety of capes with different patterns and fun things on them for the kids. They delivered these to the hospital afterwards. The leaders of this project explained to us the joy and hope that the kids feel when they receive their capes. It gives them strength and hope to keep fighting. Being a part of the impact of “Capes 4 Kids” has truly grown my compassion for those people struggling in this way. A couple other examples are when I participated in the Jingle Bell Run for arthritis through the Arthritis Foundation. People don’t get to choose whether they battle arthritis or not, it happens to them whether they are ok with it or not. I am lucky to not fight with that disease, but other people are unable to do things they love because of it. Supporting them and doing what we can to help them is the least we can do. Lastly, what developed my passion for compassion for the vulnerable was learning about and promoting the Red Cross blood drive. Donating blood helps people of all ages, accident and burn victims, heart surgery and organ transplant patients, and those battling cancer. I may not be in need of blood donations, but every two seconds, someone else in the U.S. needs blood. Encouraging people at Gilmour to donate blood saved lives, and that means a lot to me. While Praxis very much taught me the difference between charity and justice, a specific service experience I did that taught me the difference was learning about domestic violence through watching the Gabby Petito documentary. We discussed the root of the problem which was domestic violence, how to identify it, escape it, be there for those who are struggling with it, and overall lower the amount of domestic violence in our world. This is an example of justice. Charity is doing something then and there to help an issue immediately, but justice is getting to the root of the problem and supporting moral rightness. The knowledge I gained from that experience I will carry through life to make a difference. A story from my service experience that sticks with me the most is going to Saint Adalbert School to help tutor and spend time with the kids there. I went there many times and helped many kids learn through tutoring them while they do worksheets, flashcards, online learning games, etc. They were so sweet and cute, and when they had recess I would play games with them too. This transformed my understanding of service and justice because I made a difference for them educationally, but also mentally. It's all about bringing a smile to someone’s face and making a difference in their lives. The joy that me being there brought to those kids was clear, and it made me happy to see the impact I had on them.
