What I did was about 5 freshmen plus me worked a Gilmour volleyball camp along with a handful of upperclassmen to teach younger kids how to play. We also helped give them pointers and the freshmen were taught by the older girls some tricks and tidbits that they learned from their coaches. We ran volleyball drills and helped each kid individually work on serving the ball.

COURAGE
Which Gilmour charism (Divine Providence, Forgiveness, Hope, Hospitality, Inclusiveness, Option for the Poor, The Cross, Zeal) did you best live out through your service experience? Please explain.
Hospitality because in order to be able to truly help the kids that you are working with, you need to seem approachable and kind. If the kids are afraid to ask questions because they are scared of you that means you aren't accomplishing your goal of helping them.
Would you try this service experience again? Why or why not?
Yes, because I love playing volleyball and I'm good with kids, so this was an overall fun experience to be able to pass down what I've been taught, to younger kids.

Honestly, I expected to do more for the food bank. The entire 2 hours all we did was label green beans. The only things that made the experience enjoyable was when we started a competition on who could label the most cans, and the food after school. If I was to go back and do the same thing for 2 straight hours, I would never go again. This trip ruined the food bank for me, and I absolutely hated doing it. It would've been better if we labeled the beans for an hour and then switched to something else, but 2 hours of straight green beans made me go a little insane. Overall, I did not like the experience.

Every Friday when Lent started, I worked for 2.5 hours for 7 days. I worked as a hostess, seating tables, managing waitresses, and carrying food to tables. We worked at St. Mary's of the Assumption Fish Fry. I liked working with the girls because they understood how difficult working as a waitress can be.

COURAGE
Which Gilmour charism (Divine Providence, Forgiveness, Hope, Hospitality, Inclusiveness, Option for the Poor, The Cross, Zeal) did you best live out through your service experience? Please explain.
Option for the Poor because we let everyone into the Fish fry, even those who were struggling financially. They paid for their meals, but we made sure they were given extra potions. We also encompassed hospitality because we wanted everyone to feel like they were welcomed into our parish no matter where they were from or what they were going through.
Would you try this service experience again? Why or why not?
Yes, because I like working with younger kids and creating connections with them through a good act in the community. I prefer hosting because usually when I don't do it tables get messed up and everyone gets emotional. Plus, I like being able to be the one to navigate problems that arise.

I met with Gabe and a bunch of middle schoolers and explained our job as the producer and technician of the audiobook project. We talked about what we were doing, why we were doing it, and the background information regarding Mr. Corvi.

COMPETENCE
Which Gilmour charism (Divine Providence, Forgiveness, Hope, Hospitality, Inclusiveness, Option for the Poor, The Cross, Zeal) did you best live out through your service experience? Please explain.
I best lived out hospitality because we talked one-on-one with the kids and I tried to make sure they were comfortable and talked about themselves and the Audio Book.
Would you try this service experience again? Why or why not?
I wouldn't because explaining an audio book to kids is difficult because they don't understand the importance of it, as well as a group of parents, would. So if I were to do this again I'd want to explain it to adults and not middle schoolers.

I worked the St. Marys fish fry as a hostess and helped to run drink carts and placement of people at tables. I liked the experience because I got to go back to my old school and see the people who are still there when I was in 8th grade. It was overall a good experience until a lady got upset because the food wasn't coming out fast since the cooks couldn't keep up with the order and told one of the girls who worked the drink cart, "If any of you worked here for pay, you'd all be fired and ashamed of yourselves." The poor kid was 10 years old and came and told me after the woman left. Besides that, it was a great experience.

Which Gilmour charism (Divine Providence, Forgiveness, Hope, Hospitality, Inclusiveness, Option for the Poor, The Cross, Zeal) did you best live out through your service experience? Please explain.
Hospitality because my job was welcoming people and making sure they had a positive experience at dinner. I also tried to make sure the younger 4th and 5th graders felt like they could come up to me with questions.
Would you try this service experience again? Why or why not?
Yes because I love working as a hostess because I like being able to manage people and their positions. I also like being the oldest so when a customer was being mean to a younger girl, I got to go talk to them about why they were yelling at a 10-year-old.

During the Lent season, I volunteered every Friday as a hostess for St. Mary’s Church’s weekly fish fry. I welcomed guests with a good attitude, even when it wasn't reciprocated. I assisted elderly guests with seating and carrying their trays, ensuring the tables were accessible and comfortable for everyone. During peak hours, I helped resolve seating conflicts calmly, working to maintain a positive attitude even in high-pressure moments. I coordinated with other volunteers and communicated with kitchen staff to manage guest flow and reduce wait times. I also made a special effort to engage guests who came alone or were new to the event, helping them feel included in the church community.

COURAGE
Which Gilmour charism (Divine Providence, Forgiveness, Hope, Hospitality, Inclusiveness, Option for the Poor, The Cross, Zeal) did you best live out through your service experience? Please explain.
Through my service as a hostess at St. Mary’s Church fish fry, I most fully lived out the charism of Hospitality. Each week, I welcomed guests with a good attitude, striving to make everyone, from longtime visitors to first-time visitors, feel cared for and comfortable. Whether helping elderly attendees to their seats, resolving seating issues with patience, or simply offering a friendly smile to someone dining alone, I prioritized creating a welcoming environment. I believe hospitality is about more than just greeting people—it’s about making them feel truly welcome and not just a dinner event.
Would you try this service experience again? Why or why not?
Through my service at St. Mary’s fish fry, I lived out the charism of Hospitality by creating a welcoming and well-organized environment. I naturally took on a leadership role, directing guests, coordinating volunteers, and keeping things running smoothly. I enjoy having control in busy situations because it allows me to help others feel comfortable and cared for. I'm able to have everyone's experience be on me and not the younger kids. By leading with warmth and efficiency, I made sure each event was efficient and inviting.

On these days, I refereed multiple volleyball matches, whether I did the scoreboard, line judged, down reffed, or the book. I worked alongside my team and refereed other teams at that tournament's games.

COURAGE
Which Gilmour charism (Divine Providence, Forgiveness, Hope, Hospitality, Inclusiveness, Option for the Poor, The Cross, Zeal) did you best live out through your service experience? Please explain.
During my experience as a volleyball ref, the Gilmour Chairsm I lived out was hospitality. Even though refereeing is about enforcing rules, it also requires creating an environment where everyone feels respected and supported. Throughout the game, I worked to maintain a positive atmosphere by making calls clearly, treating both sides equally, and responding to frustration from others with patience and cool confidence. By staying composed and respectful, I helped ensure that the match felt fair. In this way, I practiced Hospitality not just through words, but through the tone and environment I helped create on the court.
Would you try this service experience again? Why or why not?
Yes, I would because refereeing volleyball is second best to actually playing volleyball. I like being so close to a sport I love, and even making connections with people on other teams that I would otherwise not make.

I volunteered to help promote the blood drive with a few of my friends. I also volunteered to donate blood for the blood drive at Gilmour. I also got to learn about the issues with blood transfusions, like how low-income communities have unsafe blood donation facilities.
1. Hang flyers around campus
2. Convo announcement on Wednesday, February 4- Talking and promoting our Blood Drive registration table during the community block on Feb. 4. Create a slide.
3. Convo announcement on Tuesday, Feb. 10- This announcement will be about the donors and what they need to do to prepare for the blood drive.
Are the service hours you completed COMPETENCE HOURS (learning about social justice issues) or COURAGE HOURS (direct or indirect service to others)?
Which Gilmour charism (Divine Providence, Forgiveness, Hope, Hospitality, Inclusiveness, Option for the Poor, The Cross, Zeal) did you best live out through your service experience? Please explain.
I feel I best lived the charism of Hope because by donating blood and helping others donate blood, I was giving Hope to all the people who needed blood to save lives. I also embodied zeal because I got other people excited for the blood drive.
Would you try this service experience again? Why or why not?
Yes, I would because I want to donate blood, and I want others not to be scared of donating and/or understand why we donate blood.
