West Virginia Immersion Trip
40.0 hrs Non-limited Service Hours

This fall break I went on the Immersion Trip to Kermit, West Virginia. While in West Virginia we practiced sustainable living and engaged with the community. While on the trip we immersed ourselves in Appalachian culture, and we had the opportunity to learn about the history of the area, and the struggles that remain today. The trip 4 days total, from Wednesday to Sunday. Wednesday was mainly a travel day. Thursday was our first full day in west Virginia. We went to a neighboring town and visited the Mine Wars and Train Depot Museums. These museums were an amazing opportunity to learn about the history of the area especially of coal mining. Friday was a bit of a busy day. We started our day cutting wood and doing chores, and then we visited Christian Help, a local food and clothing bank in Kermit. Saturday we spent the morning chopping wood and then in the afternoon we visited ABLE Families After School Center and played with the kids. Sunday morning we went to mass and began our journey home.

COURAGE

Which Gilmour charism (Divine Providence, Forgiveness, Hope, Hospitality, Inclusiveness, Option for the Poor, The Cross, Zeal) did you best live out through your service experience? Please explain.

The Gilmour Charism that was best exemplified through this experience was Option for the Poor. This experience exemplified Option for the Poor through my engagement in service with Christian Help. By volunteering we were able to support a food and clothing bank which provides food and clothing for those who can not afford it.

Would you try this service experience again? Why or why not?

Special Olympics
2.0 hrs Limited Service Hours

On Sunday I went to the Special Olympics track practice, and I assisted athletes practice. Each athlete had a different disability, and had unique needs which I accommodated. I met a lot of knew people and formed genuine relationships with them. This service opportunity allowed for me to see and better understand how to communicate with people in different ways. Some of the athletes were extremely high functioning, and truly didn't need any extra assistance, while others I ran with while holding their hand.

Tour Guide at Open House
2.5 hrs Limited Service Hours

On this day I was asked to be a student ambassador, and to give tours to families looking into Gilmour for future years. I spent the day with a family with three kids, one in eighth grade, and the other two in elementary school. While on the tour I learned a lot about the family and their interests as well as what they hoped to find at Gilmour. I learned that the girl I was giving the tour to also played soccer, I was sharing the tour with a senior who next year is going D1 so a lot of the tour was spent talking about that and going over that process. I learned that her and I have a lot of the same interests academically and in extra curricular activities.

Which Gilmour charism (Divine Providence, Forgiveness, Hope, Hospitality, Inclusiveness, Option for the Poor, The Cross, Zeal) did you best live out through your service experience? Please explain.

Hospitality

I feel as though this service experience embodied the Charism of Hospitality. I believe this because the tour was meant to make the family feel welcome as well as apart of the Gilmour community. By the end of the tour they even mentioned that they thought that Gilmour would be a good fit for them. By making simple conversation, and including the family in various interactions, they felt as if they already were apart of the community. I believe this experience best embodies the charism of Hospitality, because I made them feel welcome in an unfamiliar enviorment.

Would you try this service experience again? Why or why not?

Yes. I would love to take part in this service experience again. I actually still talk to my tour guide from when I attended this exact open house as an eighth grader. I hope that next year I can have the same relationship with the girl I gave the tour to as I do with the one who gave mine. This experience overall was amazing, and even made me feel more like I belong at Gilmour, it helped me to feel more at home knowing that I now was given the responsibility to invite people, and I realized that I am no longer the visitor, I am now apart of the family.

Oberlin
8.0 hrs Non-limited Service Hours

During fall break I went on the service trip gto oberlin. During this trip we toured around oberlin visiting important monuments and learning about oberlins history being apart of the underground railroad and key city in the civil rights movement. While we were there we visited the art gallery, as well as a food bank where we spent time unpacking and repacking food.

COMPETENCE

Which Gilmour charism (Divine Providence, Forgiveness, Hope, Hospitality, Inclusiveness, Option for the Poor, The Cross, Zeal) did you best live out through your service experience? Please explain.

Through this experience we best lived out the gilmour charism of inclusiveness. We did so by educating ourselves about the realities of our nations problematic historical past in order to have a better understanding of how we can move forward leaving prejudice as apart of the past, to create an inclusive culturally accepting community. On this trip we learned about the important role that oberlin played in the civil rights movement as well as assisting in the underground railroad.

Would you try this service experience again? Why or why not?

I would do this service trip again. I think that it was an amazing experience, i learned a lot, and I truly stepped out of my comfort zone. Especially at the food bank when i was sorting through rotten fruit. After this trip I feel as though now I know more about ohio's historic importance in the civil rights movement. Civil rights being a passion of mine really made this trip a meaningful experience.

Food Bank Trip
Freshman Reflection

REVISIONS REQUESTED

Glad you found the night impactful.  You would probably love the St. Pat's service at Thanksgiving!

I went to the food bank with my advisory and learned about the various was our the people in our country are impacted by food insecurity. Although I did enjoy the packaging cans, by far I found watching the video, and visually seeing the effects that an unhealthy diet has on kids health, wellness, and development. I found this to be heart breaking, and actually it made me want to do more. My friends and I have talked about maybe going back to do it again, and getting more involved in helping the food bank. At the food bank we labeled cans of unlabeled pears, and prepared them for shipment.

Freshman Mission in the Garden
2.0 hrs Limited Service Hours

On this day, me and several other incoming freshman spent the day working in the garden as well as setting up classrooms in the middle school. This was a great opportunity to see the campus, vaguely find my way around as well as getting to know some of my now peers. This truly was a great experience as well as a great opportunity to meet new people. While working in the garden a group of girls and I filled up several buckets full of weeds, I even at one point pulled out a weed the size of a small bush, and we also rolled the compost contraption for about 15 minutes. After about an hour of working in the garden, we switched into working in the middle school. My group and I set up classrooms, tables, chairs, and moved around several loads of boxes all throughout campus.

COURAGE

Which Gilmour charism (Divine Providence, Forgiveness, Hope, Hospitality, Inclusiveness, Option for the Poor, The Cross, Zeal) did you best live out through your service experience? Please explain.

During this activity,  feel as though I best expressed the Charism of hospitality by helping to set up and create a clean and welcoming environment for  incoming students and teachers.

Would you try this service experience again? Why or why not?

Yes. I definitely would love to work in the garden again, as well as setting up classrooms, but more so the garden. I actually found myself loving the gardening, and I actually may look into one of the gardening extra curricular groups because of the experience that I had on this day. Working in the garden was definitely something that I'm not necessarily used to, but I actually ended up having a lot of fun pulling weeds and spinning compost. I just found the entire experience to in general be relaxing, and it helped to, in more ways than one, soothe the nerves I was having about school.
