Going on the immersion trip to Camden, New Jersey, and staying at the Romero Center was an eye-opening experience. Each day brought a new opportunity to serve and connect with different members of the community. On the first day, I worked at the Neighborhood Center, helping in the garden. It was rewarding to contribute to a space that provides fresh produce and beauty to the area. On the second day, I visited Saint Joseph’s School, where I helped clean up after the science fair, helped students with their reading, and played with them at recess. Seeing the kids’ excitement and energy made the work feel meaningful. On the third day, I volunteered at STARS, an adult daycare center. I played games with the elderly, served food, and helped clean up. The conversations I had there reminded me of the importance of companionship and care at every stage of life. Overall, this experience deepened my understanding of service and strengthened my appreciation for the impact small acts of kindness can have on a community.
Are the service hours you completed COMPETENCE HOURS (learning about social justice issues) or COURAGE HOURS (direct or indirect service to others)?
COURAGE
Which Gilmour charism (Divine Providence, Forgiveness, Hope, Hospitality, Inclusiveness, Option for the Poor, The Cross, Zeal) did you best live out through your service experience? Please explain.
The charism I best lived out was Option for the Poor. Throughout the trip, I worked directly with individuals and communities facing economic and social challenges. Whether it was helping maintain a community garden, supporting students at Saint Joseph’s School, or spending time with adults at STARS, my service was focused on uplifting those in need and providing them with care and attention. This experience reinforced the importance of prioritizing for those who are often not seen.
Would you try this service experience again? Why or why not?
Yes, I would absolutely do this service experience again. It allowed me to step outside of my daily routine and engage with people whose perspectives and experiences were different from my own. Each day brought meaningful interactions and a sense of purpose, making me more aware of the needs of others and the impact of service. I also appreciated the opportunity to build relationships and contribute to something bigger than myself.

I took the Immersion: Theology of Encounter Class. I learned amazing things about service from the book we read and had fun answering questions and journaling.

COMPETENCE
Which Gilmour charism (Divine Providence, Forgiveness, Hope, Hospitality, Inclusiveness, Option for the Poor, The Cross, Zeal) did you best live out through your service experience? Please explain.
Option for the Poor – This class helped me understand the importance of prioritizing the needs of the poot and seeing service as a way to stand in solidarity with those who have less. Through our discussions and readings, I became more aware of social justice issues and how I can actively work toward addressing them in my own life.
Would you try this service experience again? Why or why not?
Yes, I would definitely take this class again because it gave me a new perspective on service and helped me grow in my understanding of social justice. The discussions and journaling were meaningful, and I appreciated the opportunity to reflect on what service truly means beyond just completing hours.
