I helped out at the speech tournament with the football team at Gilmour. My job was to guide the students who were participating in the tournament to the classrooms where their events were being held. I made sure they got to the right places on time and answered any questions they had. It was a good way to help others and represent our school.

During Freshman Gateway, I helped incoming freshmen by giving them advice. I talked to them about the different people around the campus, what they do and how you get to them.

Helping out at freshman orientation was a really positive experience. I worked with the incoming freshmen in Coach Bates’ advisory by giving them advice about high school and showing them around the school. It felt good to welcome them and make them feel more comfortable with the new environment. I remembered how it felt to be a freshman and wanted to make their first day less stressful.

I went with my football team to help clean up the day after the Fest. We picked up trash, moved supplies, and made sure the area looked clean for the community. It was a good chance to work together as a team off the field, and it felt great knowing we were helping make the place better for everyone.

Zeal – I showed enthusiasm and energy while serving with my team, even though it was the day after a long event and we had practice right before. We all worked hard to make the cleanup go quickly and effectively, and my positive attitude helped keep everyone motivated to finish the job well.
Would you try this service experience again? Why or why not?
Yes! I really hope we do this again next year.

It was very fun working with all of my friends and teammates moving boxes into the dorms. Being able to help out Mr. Brown with all the boxes and seeing how appreciative he was meant a lot.

I went to an abandoned school in East Cleveland that is being transformed into a new space for Food Strong. While I was there, my football team and I helped clean up trash around the property and assisted with all the tasks they asked us to do. It felt good to contribute to a place that will serve the community in a positive way, and I got to see firsthand how small efforts can support a larger mission.

I took the Immersion: Theology of Encounter Class. I learned amazing things about service from the book we read and had fun answering questions and journaling.
Are the service hours you completed COMPETENCE HOURS (learning about social justice issues) or COURAGE HOURS (direct or indirect service to others)?
COMPETENCE
Which Gilmour charism (Divine Providence, Forgiveness, Hope, Hospitality, Inclusiveness, Option for the Poor, The Cross, Zeal) did you best live out through your service experience? Please explain.
Option for the Poor – This class helped me understand the importance of prioritizing the needs of the poot and seeing service as a way to stand in solidarity with those who have less. Through our discussions and readings, I became more aware of social justice issues and how I can actively work toward addressing them in my own life.
Would you try this service experience again? Why or why not?
Yes, I would definitely take this class again because it gave me a new perspective on service and helped me grow in my understanding of social justice. The discussions and journaling were meaningful, and I appreciated the opportunity to reflect on what service truly means beyond just completing hours.

Going on the immersion trip to Camden, New Jersey, and staying at the Romero Center was an eye-opening experience. Each day brought a new opportunity to serve and connect with different members of the community. On the first day, I worked at the Neighborhood Center, helping in the garden. It was rewarding to contribute to a space that provides fresh produce and beauty to the area. On the second day, I visited Saint Joseph’s School, where I helped clean up after the science fair, helped students with their reading, and played with them at recess. Seeing the kids’ excitement and energy made the work feel meaningful. On the third day, I volunteered at STARS, an adult daycare center. I played games with the elderly, served food, and helped clean up. The conversations I had there reminded me of the importance of companionship and care at every stage of life. Overall, this experience deepened my understanding of service and strengthened my appreciation for the impact small acts of kindness can have on a community.
Are the service hours you completed COMPETENCE HOURS (learning about social justice issues) or COURAGE HOURS (direct or indirect service to others)?
COURAGE
Which Gilmour charism (Divine Providence, Forgiveness, Hope, Hospitality, Inclusiveness, Option for the Poor, The Cross, Zeal) did you best live out through your service experience? Please explain.
The charism I best lived out was Option for the Poor. Throughout the trip, I worked directly with individuals and communities facing economic and social challenges. Whether it was helping maintain a community garden, supporting students at Saint Joseph’s School, or spending time with adults at STARS, my service was focused on uplifting those in need and providing them with care and attention. This experience reinforced the importance of prioritizing for those who are often not seen.
Would you try this service experience again? Why or why not?
Yes, I would absolutely do this service experience again. It allowed me to step outside of my daily routine and engage with people whose perspectives and experiences were different from my own. Each day brought meaningful interactions and a sense of purpose, making me more aware of the needs of others and the impact of service. I also appreciated the opportunity to build relationships and contribute to something bigger than myself.

Before going to the Greater Cleveland Food Bank, I didn't think much about it. I figured putting labels on cans of diced potatoes wouldn't make a big difference. But when I got there and saw how much this meant to the people that worked there, I realized every little thing mattered. Even though putting labels on cans seemed small, it was actually helping a lot of people who needed food. It made me see how many people struggle with getting enough to eat. After leaving, I felt proud to have helped, and I want to keep doing things like that to help others in my community.
