I went on the GA immersion experience to Kermit WV. This year the trip focused on ecological study and conservation efforts. We toured a KSU survey site in Kentucky that monitored a mining reclamation area, learning about the technology they used as well as building reptile habitats for local animals. Furthermore, we worked on maintaining and upkeeping trails and nearby properties by pruning trees, removing invasive species and hauling fallen wood. Lastly, we worked on chores around the Big Laurel property. This trip really was a unique experience even compared to last years WV trip.
Are the service hours you completed COMPETENCE HOURS (learning about social justice issues) or COURAGE HOURS (direct or indirect service to others)?
COMPETENCE
Which Gilmour charism (Divine Providence, Forgiveness, Hope, Hospitality, Inclusiveness, Option for the Poor, The Cross, Zeal) did you best live out through your service experience? Please explain.
I think that we best lived option for the poor because of the nature of the people we were around. The area we were in was filled with poverty, and even to live in solidarity and do what I can to help allowed us to do lots of service to the community. The work we did there will hopefully have a lasting impact on Big Laurel and the area surrounding it.
Would you try this service experience again? Why or why not?
I have already attended this trip two years running and because of other commitments in the spring break season I feel that I have attended this trip for the last time.

In preparation for the Big Laurel Trip we took a class, and learned about the meaning of service and the injustices and issues that the communities that we would be in faced. Overall this class was very informational and insightful.

I think we lived out option for the poor the best by learning how to suffer in solidarity with those that we would encounter and live with.
Would you try this service experience again? Why or why not?
I would not necessarily take the class on its own again, however if it meant going back to big laurel I think I would take it again.

We traveled to Kermit, West Virginia for a week an learned about Appalachian culture. The trip focused on the history of West Virginia as a coal mining state and also experienced how it has shaped the lives of those who live there, from bad drinking water, to the destruction of nature and even a personal injury story from the mines. In the end I would do it again and I really liked the trip.

I think that this trip was highly informative for me. Although I have researched food insecurity to a high degree I think that this trip was still extremely meaningful. This its because there was a personal aspect to this experience. I also thoroughly enjoyed the service despite being anxious, as I sometimes find myself overwhelmed when I am in a big group. Having an individual job was very nice. Overall I enjoyed this experience and would do it again.

We loaded cars then delivered two baskets with others. I learned what the scope of poverty was when we would knock on doors and see the residents and their bare living rooms.

We lived out option for the poor by providing the poor with food for their thanksgiving meals.
Would you try this service experience again? Why or why not?
I would do this again because I enjoy spending time with friends and helping behind the scenes, if I could choose though, I would not deliver food as it feels really weird and artificial to me.
